Many consider acupuncture to be an efficient, tried and tested method of healing which has been used for thousands of years. The different forms of acupuncture use needling methods to inject acupuncture needles into defined points that can be located across the body. Boca Raton Acupuncture Association is an excellent resource for this.
These points are considered to have little energy whirlpools (qi) on them and are all linked through pathways or channels called meridians to different body parts and organs.
The traditional roots of acupuncture lie in the fact that illness is caused by energy (qi) issues that run through pathways (meridians) and can be positively or negatively affected by the five elements, yin and yang, as well as other internal and external causes.
When the needles are inserted in the correct points, an acupuncture course can help to re-align the qi so that it will run effectively for the well-being of the patient. Acupuncture increases the inherent healing potential of the body itself and corrects imbalances.
A medical acupuncture paradigm began to evolve from the 1970s, proposing a neurological basis for healing art rather than an energy basis. Medical acupuncture, also referred to as scientific acupuncture, claims that the insertion of the needles in the points stimulates the endings of the nerves, with various effects.
A Little History Of Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been used by eastern countries and other nations for thousands of years to treat various kinds of diseases. Thought to have originated in China, acupuncture was first recorded in the Classic of Internal Medicine of the Huang Di Nei Jing-Yellow Emperor, which is known as the world’s oldest medical journal.
Proof has been cited in Europe that acupuncture was performed elsewhere in the Bronze Age era in Eurasia. Otzi the Iceman-the mummified body 5000 + years old had fifteen classes of tattoos, some at places known to be acupuncture points.
Earlier types of acupuncture were performed during the Stone Age by the Eskimos and also by the North American Indians in Egypt, India , Sri Lanka, South America. Proof exists that it was also taught as an Ayurvedic subject in India.
Portuguese missionaries were claimed to be among the first to reintroduce it to the west in the 16th century. Doctors and missionaries from other countries have played a role in introducing acupuncture to Europe starting in the 17th century.
It is assumed that there are channels or meridians in the body where there are pressure points or acupoints. Acupuncturists claim there are about 365 points lying along these meridians, extending across the brain from the fingers. It creates an imbalance of qi or energy when a meridian is blocked, which causes the onset of a disease.
It operates like acupressure, but acupuncture uses needles while acupressure uses hands, elbows, feet, fingertips, palms and machines to apply pressure to the acupoints.
Proponents of this ancient oriental tradition claim that a disturbance, interference or blockage in the normal flow of energy within the body causes illnesses. By eliminating these obstructions and restoring the normal flow of energy or qi through the body’s meridians, acupuncture helps.
Disharmony has been created by a number of possibilities in the TCM definition of illness and the aim is to harmonise the system again by accurate and comprehensive diagnosis.
The International Organization for Health (WHO) and Acupuncture
And the International Health Organization (WHO) today recognises the benefits acupuncture offers. According to WHO, acupuncture is useful in the treatment of a variety of diseases related to the body’s respiratory , digestive, circulatory and reproductive systems. Even acupuncture is effective in fixing the imbalances in the body’s main organs. Basically, acupuncture aims to avoid the onset of infections, to treat medical problems that are mild to life-threatening, and to encourage an individual’s general health and fitness.
